LILY Letter 178: Getting Comfortable with Contradictions

October 10, 2024

Donald Trump has always been a larger-than-life figure, not just in politics but in the fabric of American culture. His unique blend of charisma, boldness, and raw energy has garnered admiration from many and intense scrutiny from others. Trump's gifts are undeniable—his ability to connect with a crowd, inspire loyalty, and his resilience in the face of challenges stand out. But, like all leaders, Trump also has his weaknesses. His tendency to polarize and his unyielding self-confidence can sometimes be a double-edged sword, alienating some while rallying others. The complexities of his persona highlight an important truth about humanity: we are all imperfect, yet capable of remarkable things.

The recent assassination attempt(s!) on Trump is a chilling reminder of the dangers of division and the power of resilience. As bullets flew, Trump recalls feeling a strange calm and the protection of God as brave Secret Service agents rushed to his side. He could have easily focused on the hatred aimed at him, but instead, he chose to see the love and concern radiating from the crowd. "This beautiful crowd didn’t want to leave me," he said, acknowledging their support. In moments of crisis, we often see the best and worst of humanity, and Trump's experience was no different—hate on one side, love and protection on the other. It's a poignant reminder that, in our darkest hours, moments of grace often emerge if we are watching for them.

This political figure sparks a larger conversation: Can we support someone who is imperfect? History is filled with figures, like Joseph Smith, who were flawed yet led with heart and conviction. Relationships, whether personal or with leaders, are often defined by our ability to embrace contradictions. We can recognize and even love people for their strengths while acknowledging their weaknesses without dishonoring their agency. Trump's persona reminds us that humanity is messy and colorful, but even in our imperfection, there is greatness to be found. Whether in leaders, partners, or friends, our task is to get comfortable with the contradictions that make us human.
