LILY Letter 215: Seeing Beyond Division in Culture, Religion, and Relationships

March 6, 2026

On our recent trip to Austria, we stumbled upon a modern art display in the historic district of Salzburg that captured our attention and imagination. Nestled in the residence plaza, five massive stone faces of women from different continents stood taller than the central fountain and surrounding buildings. At first glance, they seemed strange and out of place. As we lingered, and walked around each one, we were able to see the nation they each came from more clearly. Although they faced inward, towards each other, each had her eyes closed. It felt symbolic—like a quiet invitation to consider whether we choose to open our eyes to see and understand people who are different from us.

The world feels increasingly unsettled because too many of us have lost the desire to truly understand and respect those who we differ from. Attempts to silence voices we disagree with—like what happened with Charlie Kirk—rarely work as intended. In fact, trying to shut people down tends to amplify division instead of bridging it. It is more important than ever to open our eyes beyond our own perspective, to set aside societal labels, and seek understanding to see our fellow humans more clearly. Our video will help you develop the art of understanding those who are different, as we dive into these ideas more deeply—sharing reflections from the Salzburg sculptures and the lessons they inspired.

The sculptures themselves became a metaphor for this message. Five continents. Five women. Eyes closed, yet full of quiet power—reminding us of the unseen stories, dreams, and memories each person carries. Just like Salzburg’s unexpected art, the world is full of a “Secret Garden” of human souls, waiting to be discovered. We hope this week’s letter and video inspire you to pause, look again, and embrace the richness of people and perspectives that might otherwise go unseen.

Mysterious Symbolism: Secret Garden Faces in Salzburg

In the destructively divisive way we have seen people disagreeing, this topic has never been more important. We explore the powerful symbolism behind five giant sculptures in Salzburg, Austria—and what they teach us about opening our eyes, our hearts, and our minds to people who see the world differently.
