LILY Letter 205: Thoughts About Inheritance & Marrying for Money

August 21, 2025

When love and money mix, things can get complicated—especially after the death of a spouse or following a divorce. When a parent remarries, emotions often run high—especially when money is involved. But it’s time to rethink an uncomfortable truth: adult children are not automatically entitled to an inheritance. While it’s natural to want to pass on a financial legacy, that choice belongs to the person who earned or inherited the wealth. Remarrying doesn't have to mean abandoning a late spouse’s memory or shortchanging the next generation. With the right tools—like trusts, updated wills, and prenuptial agreements—you can protect what matters most while still choosing love again.

Much of the drama surrounding remarriage and inheritance comes from unclear expectations. Children often assume that everything their parent owns will eventually come to them, which can breed resentment if a new spouse enters the picture. That’s why honest, early conversations are essential. It’s okay to let your children know that while you love them, you also have the right to build a future with someone new—and that you may or may not leave behind a financial inheritance. By being clear and firm, you reduce confusion and defuse entitlement before it becomes conflict.

At the same time, it’s wise to protect yourself. Whether you're concerned about someone marrying you for your money—or feel tempted to pursue someone because of their wealth—remember that relationships built on financial motives often collapse under emotional strain. Real love is based on trust, shared values, and mutual respect. With careful planning, grounded expectations, and a commitment to open communication, you can safeguard your heart, your family, and your legacy—without sacrificing your chance at happiness.
