LILY Letter 189: Lessons from WICKED - Things Aren't Always As They Seem

January 24, 2025

The new movie musical Wicked: Part One teaches us that life, love, and relationships are far more complex than the labels we assign or the narratives we choose to believe. One of the most poignant moments in the story is when Elphaba sings I’m Not That Girl, a heart-breaking reflection on feeling unworthy of love. How often do we let self-doubt and insecurities hold us back? Like Elphaba, many of us assume we don’t stand a chance with someone because we don’t fit their “ideal.” But love isn’t about perfection; it’s about authenticity and connection. Often, the very qualities we see as flaws are what make us uniquely lovable.

Another powerful theme from Wicked is how Elphaba is unfairly branded as the “Wicked Witch.” Divorce and other conflicts often mirror this dynamic. In emotionally charged situations, it’s easy for one person to be labeled as the villain—especially when mutual friends or family members seek someone to blame. However, as Wicked reminds us, life is rarely black and white. Everyone has their own story, shaped by struggles, motives, and circumstances. By resisting the urge to judge based on incomplete information, we create space for empathy, understanding, and healing.

The overarching lesson from Wicked is simple yet profound: things are not always as they seem. Whether you’re navigating love, heartbreak, or personal growth, remember that every story has layers. Approach your relationships with curiosity instead of judgment, and embrace the courage to see yourself and others for who they truly are. Life is messy, nuanced, and beautiful—and when we lead with compassion, we open ourselves to deeper connections and a greater sense of peace.
