LILY Letter 186: The Only Kind of Love You Can Control

December 20, 2024

As we know from our understanding of agency and our study of "Real Love with Dr. Greg Baer," we know we can't control who chooses to love us and who does not. Yet we also know through scripture that God is Love and we are created in His image and therefore, we carry His love in us. Our Father in Heaven wants us to have JOY. Love is a joyful gift and yet sometimes external sources of love grow cold. This can feel especially painful for newly divorced singles. Something we learn when left on our own is that the only kind of love we get to control is the kind that comes from God within ourselves.

Have you ever wondered what self-love truly means? It’s a term we hear so often, yet it’s rarely explained in a way that feels meaningful. Inspired by a powerful clip from Matthew Hussey’s video What People Get Wrong About Self Love,” our newest YouTube video dives into the heart of this topic. Hussey challenges the outdated idea that self-love must be “earned” by meeting certain standards or accomplishments. When we inevitably fall short of our own ideals, this old way of thinking often leaves us with self-contempt instead of compassion. Hussey’s insights invite us to rethink our relationship with ourselves and embrace a more liberating perspective.

The key takeaway? Self-love doesn’t start with a feeling; it begins with a commitment. From the moment we’re born, we are given stewardship over ourselves—our “human,” as Hussey puts it. Just like we naturally care for our children because they’re ours, we’re entrusted to care for ourselves in the same way. This new model of self-love doesn’t require us to “deserve” love. Instead, it’s about taking responsibility for our well-being and striving to create the best possible life for ourselves.

As you reflect on your own journey, ask yourself, “What is my relationship with me?” Is it one of care and stewardship, or does it need nurturing? Remember, self-love isn’t about perfection—it’s about commitment. We’d love to hear your thoughts so feel free to share your reflections in the comments on this week’s video. Invite others to explore this empowering perspective. It’s always a great time for more love in your life!

With love and encouragement,

Self Love Redefined: Relationship Coaches React to Matthew Hussey's "What People Get Wrong About Self Love"

In this video, we explore Matthew Hussey's perspective on self-love, challenging the traditional idea that love must be "earned" through accomplishments. Instead, Hussey introduces a refreshing model where self-love is a commitment to care for ourselves, simply because we are entrusted with that stewardship. This empowering approach shifts the focus from feelings to actions, encouraging us to create the best life possible for ourselves.
