LILY Letter 180: The Pros & Cons of Arranged Marriage

November 1, 2024

In this week's new release on LILY Tube, we delve into the complex topic of arranged marriage, inspired by the reality TV show "Married at First Sight." As single life and relationship coaches, we explore the dynamics and outcomes of couples paired by professional matchmakers. The show initially impressed us with its thoughtful selection process, where Season 13 served as our case study. Although we primarily focus on the show's premise, we couldn't help but share a few thoughts on the season's five couples.

Arranged marriages, as portrayed on the show, come with a mix of advantages and challenges. The immediate commitment can foster a deeper connection than dating. We also observed the trust these new couples placed in the matchmakers when all participants agreed to marry their assigned partners. However, this setup also raises concerns. The rush to intimacy with the usual expectation to have sex on the first night after being wed, didn't work for strangers -- which led couples to delay consummation who needed time to build trust. What really caused us the most concern was the imposed eight-week period to decide on divorce. It felt contrived, putting undue pressure on newlyweds to hastily evaluate their compatibility.

Despite these drawbacks, "Married at First Sight" highlighted valuable insights. One participant's advice to embrace the marriage without dwelling on "what ifs" emphasized the importance of true commitment. Mediator Pastor Cal's wisdom on reconciliation and adjusting without running away resonated deeply. The experts stressed the significance of developing "qualities for success" over finding the perfect match, a sentiment echoed by Dating Coach Dr. Viviana's warning against waiting for fleeting butterflies. Sociologist Dr. Pepper's insight on perception underscored the importance of understanding and adapting to one's partner. These lessons from the show offer a nuanced perspective on the realities of arranged marriages and relationship development in general.
