LILY Letter 168: Being Passionate, Without Overdoing It

July 12, 2024

In this week's video, we delve into the concept of "bridling your passions," a metaphorical understanding that resonates deeply within spiritual and personal development. The image of a bridle, traditionally used to guide and control a horse, offers a powerful analogy for managing our internal drives and desires. Just as a bridle directs a horse, bridling our passions involves consciously directing our emotions and energies towards positive and purposeful outcomes.

Passion, defined as the intense enthusiasm or emotion that fuels our pursuits, can be both a source of strength and a potential pitfall if left unchecked. In the pursuit of success or spiritual growth, it's crucial to harness these passions with wisdom and discernment. This means not suppressing them entirely, but rather guiding them towards constructive ends aligned with our values and spiritual beliefs.

Drawing from the wisdom of ancient texts and philosophical insights, we understand that true mastery of our passions involves a balanced approach. Noah Webster's definition of passion in the 1828 American Dictionary of the English Language captures its essence as both the intense emotion that motivates us AND the potential agitation it can cause when uncontrolled. Therefore, bridling our passions entails not only managing their intensity but also ensuring they serve a higher purpose — fostering harmony within ourselves and promoting goodwill towards others.

In practical terms, this concept invites us to cultivate what psychologists call harmonious passion — a deep love for an activity that enhances our well-being and aligns with our values, rather than an obsessive drive that can lead to burnout or harm. By integrating passion with purpose, we create a pathway to personal fulfillment and spiritual growth, ensuring that our energies contribute positively to our own lives and the lives of those around us.

Bridling our passions becomes a journey of self-awareness and intentional living, where each decision and action is guided by a desire for balance, peace, and meaningful impact. As we strive to harness our passions in alignment with our spiritual beliefs and higher callings, we embark on a path towards holistic well-being and a deeper connection to our purpose in life.
