LILY Letter 152: Encore Marriage—Love's Resilient Journey

March 14, 2024

We recently watched a delightful film on Netflix called "Queen Bees." The story follows Helen, a spirited woman who, after a kitchen fire mishap, reluctantly moves to the vibrant Pine Grove retirement community. What initially seems like a setback soon unfolds into a journey of self-discovery, friendship, and love. Helen navigates the social intricacies of a changed environment, humorously likening her new community to "mean girls but with medical alert bracelets."

The film beautifully portrays the complexities of relationships as we age, highlighting the accommodations we must make for age-related conditions. As Helen adjusts to her new surroundings, she encounters Dan, a charming gentleman who brings new spark to her life and over time wins her heart. Their relationship takes an unexpected twist when Helen learns Dan was initially hired to show her a good time but was never transparent about it with her. Upset by this revelation, Helen breaks off their relationship. When she discovers that he moved out and returned all his compensation, she comes to believe he really does care for her. Despite that serious setback, their love prevails—reminding us that it is never too late to find happiness and companionship.

"Queen Bees" is not just a story about finding love in our golden years. It is a testament to the enduring power of love and the importance of embracing opportunities to live life to the fullest at every age. The term "Encore Marriage" comes near the end when Dan & Helen get married. "We're blessed today to celebrate an encore wedding. Encore means again. And despite the loss of loved ones and all the pain that life has thrown at them, these two stand before us having found love again." This film is a celebration of love's timeless nature, and it resonates with LILY—cultivating intentional joy and finding new beginnings at any age.
