LILY Letter 150: Growth in Hardship and Success

February 22, 2024

In this week's video, we discuss why God allows us to suffer pain. It's a natural human tendency when we are in a lot of pain to wonder why God would allow it if He loves us and wants us to have joy. In our faith, we are taught the plan of happiness - that we are on this Earth to experience mortal life and to become like our Heavenly Father through the various challenges that are part of our life path. It's at painful times that we tend to remind ourselves that "what doesn't kill me makes me stronger" and that there is purpose in the pain we experience as we allow it to foster our personal growth and progress.

While this is wise during times of hardship, sometimes we can get so good at being resilient that we wonder if life will ever be anything but painful. With this thinking, we may attract more painful experiences because we've learned how much we can grow from them. Shortly after Cathy's second divorce she was visiting with her doctor and he said something surprisingly profound. He said, "Yes, we learn from failure and hardship (like divorce) but we can learn even more from success and joy (in relationships)."

That statement has the power to shift our thinking from over-valuing hard lessons to increasing our focus and capacity for overcoming hardships and moving beyond them. It can give us the power to move out of the pain, anticipating and actively creating love and goodness in our lives and in our relationships. As the end of the 13th article of Faith expresses, "If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of a good report, or praiseworthy we seek after these things."
