LILY Letter 143: A Word for the New Year?

January 4, 2024

Every January, social media is full of posts where people announce their choice for a word as their theme for the year. For the past 7-8 years (since before we married), we've been choosing a word for ourselves. In 2023, Jeff chose "Strength" and Cathy chose "Comfort." We'd like to share a bit about our journey with our words for this past year. We invite you to "reply" and share your word for 2023 and a bit about your journey with us - we'd love to hear your stories!

After my son, my grandmother, and my mom died in late 2022, to function in every-day life required strength and resilience. Transitioning from the attorney general's office to a private firm a few months later required strengthening faith. The loss of Cathy's best friend on the heels of other deaths created accumulated grief for me while at the same time requiring the strength to comfort my spouse.

I have learned that strength comes from believing for good things to come. Developing that enduring hope is our best chance at manifesting the blessings we want in our lives. The world is a more hospitable place when we believe in a God of miracles.

I've also learned that personal power and strength isn't everything. Real joy in life comes from connected relationships. We can be strong and alone but alone we're not as strong as we can be with loved ones.

The interesting thing I've learned about "comfort" is that most of the time we have to decide what discomfort we are willing to deal with in order to be comfortable elsewhere. For example, it doesn't feel very comfortable to me to be on a schedule but it feels even worse to be late for things. I prefer to have the comfort of being on time and deal with the discomfort of what it takes to make that happen.

Jim Rohn says, "We must all suffer from one of two pains: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret." You can replace the word pain with discomfort and it's pretty much the same thing.

Another thing I learned is that comfort, much like patience, may not be something to aspire to. When I picked the word I was thinking about ways I could make life more comfortable (like adjusting the temperature, using lotion on dry skin, getting plenty of rest, eating delicious and nutritious food, etc.). I didn't think about the fact that life might present some challenges and opportunities to need more comfort (like my best friend dying from cancer). Quite often, the words we've felt drawn to through the years have supported experiences we didn't realize we would have.

Many of you have experienced significant losses in your life and, as a result, you may have experienced the greatest loss of all—a loss of hope. Because we have recently entered a new year, we suggest that you prayerfully choose a word to serve as your theme or focus for 2024. Use it to give meaning and power to all your efforts. Remember that hope still lives because our God is a God of redemption.

Happy New Year 2024!

Jeff & Cathy Teichert
