For most of us, life offers us a plethora of options that keep us super busy and many of us are over taxed and stressed out. Life is more uncertain for many people now than ever before because of the fast pace of life with technology. This leaves many of us with serious anxiety and overwhelm. So what can we do about these pressing matters?
Mindfulness is a tool that can help ground us in the present and remind us that we are safe. As much as we may have fear racing through our our nervous system, we are not generally being physically or emotionally threatened, even though our thoughts and emotions will often tell our body that we are, even when we are not. The Oxford dictionary defines mindfulness as:
1. The quality or state of being conscious or aware of something.
2. A mental state achieved by focusing one's awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one's feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, used as a therapeutic technique.
Mindfulness can be practiced anytime in daily life and within a variety of health and wellness practices such as meditation, yoga, energy work, connecting with nature, reaching out to our higher power in prayer, Sabbath services, temple worship, and even self care practices. Using our five senses to experience our current surroundings and taking deep breaths can ground us in the moment and help us feel safe.
